Scientists are reporting that household washing machines seem to be a major source of so-called "microplastic" pollution — bits of polyester and acrylic smaller than the head of a pin — that they now have detected on ocean shorelines worldwide. Their report describing this potentially harmful material appears in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Although commodities and stocks have been positively correlated for the last several years, in recent weeks equities have been decoupling from commodities.  Since the recent lows, the S&P 500 has rallied by about 10%.  While stocks have rallied, commodities like gold are revisiting their September lows.  On September 26th, gold closed at $1,592.7.  In the four weeks since that low, gold saw a modest rally of 5.5%, but it has since given up much of that rebound and is now within 1% of its closing low for the year.

Greece’s lenders representatives in Athens, also known as the “Troika”, released their report on fiscal progress and gave the green light for the 8 billion EUR. The sixth bailout tranche would be released to Greece most likely in early November, after the Eurogroup & IMF approval of the progress report.
